Water: A Key Focus in Climate Change Solutions

The World Bank Group’s People in a Changing Climate report highlights essential actions and financial strategies to address climate change. Drawing on insights from 72 Climate Country and Development Reports (CCDR), the report underscores the critical role of individuals in both facing climate risks and implementing solutions for climate adaptation and low-carbon development.

CCDRs: Guiding Countries Toward Climate Action

The CCDRs, introduced in 2022, are designed to help countries align their development goals with climate action. They focus on enhancing resilience, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These reports span nations of various income levels and emphasize collaboration between governments, businesses, and citizens to advance climate and development objectives.

Impact on Low-Income Countries

The report stresses the disproportionate impact of climate change on low-income countries, particularly in terms of labor productivity losses due to rising temperatures. It advocates for people-centered policies, resilient infrastructure, and macroeconomic strategies to reduce vulnerabilities and support green economies. Global cooperation is essential for mitigating these challenges and enabling sustainable transitions.

Water Scarcity and Climate Risks

Water access is a central issue in the report, as climate change threatens water availability and increases extreme events like droughts and floods. Droughts harm agriculture, energy production, and food security, leading to migration and malnutrition in poorer countries. Meanwhile, floods cause fatalities, spread diseases, and damage infrastructure, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations and damaging economies.
