World Soil Day (WSD) 2024 – Celebrating and Protecting Soils
World Soil Day (WSD) is observed every year on December 5th, to raise awareness about the critical role of healthy soils and promote the sustainable management of soil resources.
In 2002, the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) proposed the concept of an international day dedicated to soil. Under the leadership of Thailand and with the backing of the Global Soil Partnership, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) played a crucial role in establishing World Soil Day (WSD) as a global platform for raising awareness. In June 2013, the FAO Conference officially approved WSD, and the 68th UN General Assembly later adopted it. As a result, December 5, 2014, was officially recognized as the first World Soil Day.
